This postcard has a part where you can fill in where you are on the front. This person was apparently in Worchester.

This city in Massachusetts happens to be the city where Esther Howland, the "mother of the American valentine" lived until her death in 1904. Howland's cards were the ornate, lace and ribbon-style Valentines' day cards seen in this era (these are some in the Metropolitan Museum's collection). This one in particular shows some of her work:

This postcard isn't from her style, but I think it's fun that this postcard was sent from Worcester and is just so dismally unenthusiastic.

I mean, look at the expressions on their faces. The dude might as well be kissing a canteloupe for all the enthusiasm he seems to have. The woman also seems resigned to the situation.

Of course, this is just my interpretation and I seriously doubt they were paid much for this silly photo. But still. From a city famous for valentine's cards, you'd figure they'd put in a bit of effort.

My sassy commentary aside, it's pretty fun that the sender is looking forward to what I am presuming is ice skating after this date in November. I hope they had fun.
